He attended University of Maryland and is inducted in UMD Athletics Hall of Fame.

Randy is avid animal lover and has the honor of being the only NFL Hall of Fame player who is also inducted in the Hall of Fame for Cowboys in Ft Worth TX. Randy once smuggled a tiny stray dog onto the plane returning from the Cowboys' training camp in Thousand Oaks. He had seen the dog hanging around where the Cowboys were practicing and decided to take it home because he overheard that animal control would have to get involved at the end of camp. Randy took the dog home by hiding it from flight attendants in a box between his legs.

He resides in Dallas area with wife Susan and their pets Ernie and Sasha.
